a word about weed

5 May

So yesterday, DC passed a law allowing the use of medical marijuana in the District. As someone who has never smoked weed in her life (and I’m being honest, and I’m not just saying that because sometimes my mom stops by to read up on what her baby girl is up to these days), I say: HUZZAH. I mean really, why the shit not? I actually think marijuana should be legalized in general, not just for medical usage.

If I’m reading the interwebs correctly, 14 states have legalized medical marijuana. So all you glaucoma sufferers and chemo patients* in Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont**, Washington, and now, of course, the District of Columbia – enjoy your time with Mary Jane! I hear she’s a lovely one.

Whether you agree with a state’s, or the federal government’s decision to legalize wacky tabacky (seriously, how many nicknames for pot can I fit into one blog post?), here’s my question: Obviously the distribution centers are in those states/territories where medical marijuana is legalized. But where are they actually growing the marijuana? (A Maryland resident had an idea, but clearly any plan that can be foiled by a turtle is not really such a good plan.) How does one get to be a grow house/distribution center in the states/territories where medical marijuana is legal?

Do you have to fill out an application?

Send in a résumé?

Do you have to have prior experience? If you do have prior experience, do you list that, or will you get in trouble?

Is this going to be the new way that the government is trying to help farmers, transferring their skill set from corn and soybeans to weed?

Do you have to have an undergraduate degree in the sciences? A PhD in botany?

I’m not trying to be snarky or facetious, I really do want to know. I find it all kind of fascinating.

And besides, you can only learn so much from watching Weeds and Entourage.

*And apparently, anyone who goes to the same eye doctor as The Swede, who was offered a “prescription” by said doctor, “You know, for if you ever go to California.”

**HIPPIES! Of course they legalized weed for medical purposes.***

*** Dude. I’m kidding.

The best “getting caught growing weed” story happened in my good ole state of Louisiana. A woman was minding her own bizness and a freaking plane crashed into her backyard. Out of nowhere! The cops came to help, you know, the injured pilot and happened upon said woman’s weed garden.

Seems like Someone wanted to teach that lady a lesson.

You can’t make this stuff up.
